  18.   The major changes in the technical upgrade of Paradox ver 3.0 to
  19.   3.5 are in the areas of memory management, connectivity to SQL
  20.   databases, updates to PAL, changes in the form and report
  21.   generators, and some improvements to the Custom Configuration
  22.   Program.

  24.   1-In the area of memory management the major changes are:
  25.  
  26.   The application of VROOMM (tm) technology into Paradox now allows
  27.   it to run faster while requiring less memory (depending on
  28.   equipment and configuration), thereby leaving more memory for
  29.   your network drivers, your applications, and/or your data.
  30.  
  31.   On an 80286 or 80386 based computer Paradox can be configured to
  32.   run in real mode or protected mode if you have more than 1MB of
  33.   RAM.  Real mode is that which simulates the functionality of the
  34.   8086 computer, (addressing up to 1MB of RAM) and the ability to
  35.   utilize expanded memory only.  In real mode Paradox 3.5 can use
  36.   expanded (EMS) and extended RAM as a swap device or disk cache.
  37.   In protected mode Paradox can now utilize your systems' hardware
  38.   to best advantage.  Since extended memory does not use a memory
  39.   manager based on 64K pages, its' use is advantageous over
  40.   expanded memory.  Paradox 3.5 can load in protected mode if there
  41.   is 1MB or more of extended memory, so that up to 16MB of RAM can
  42.   be addressed for program code, applications, data, scripts and
  43.   variables.  With enough memory swapping to disk can be reduced in
  44.   most cases.  This also means that Paradox 2.0 version 386 is no
  45.   longer needed.  In addition, there are command line parameters
  46.   that will allow you to control the amount of extended and/or
  47.   expanded memory Paradox 3.5 is using, thereby leaving the
  48.   remainder of your memory available for other programs.

  50.   If you are operating on a 8088 IBM XT, there will be little or no
  51.   difference in the performance you will see.  If you have a 286 or
  52.   386 and no extended RAM, again you will notice little change. If
  53.   however you have a 286 or 386 and total RAM of more than 2
  54.   megabytes, your applications should run faster.  How much faster
  55.   will be determined by a number of different factors.  The type of
  56.   work you do and how much RAM you have available for Paradox 3.5
  57.   are the two main determining factors.

  59.   2-A second area which differs from Paradox 3.0 is connectivity.

  84.   Paradox 3.5 is SQL Link available for when you might need
  85.   connectivity an SQL database.  The Paradox SQL-Link is a separate
  86.   package you can add anytime.  With the SQL Link Paradox can now
  87.   perform QBE and other data manipulation operations on data stored
  88.   on the following SQL servers without the user first having to
  89.   learn SQL:

  91.   -IBM OS/2 Extended Edition v 1.2 Database Manager
  92.   -Oracle Server v6.0
  93.   -Microsoft SQL Server v 1.0 or higher

  104.   MAX, MONTH, NRECORDS, PMT, RAND, ROUND, SQRT, STRVAL, TIME,

  107.   4-Changes to Paradox Network Support are:

  109.   Paradox now supports 3Com 3Plus Open networks. Additionally,

  118.   5-The Custom Configuration Program Has the Following Additions

  121.   Tune: The custom program has a new section called Tune that deals
  122.   with the way Paradox handles the use of Extended and Expanded
  123.   RAM. From within the Tune menu you can optimize the speed with
  124.   which Paradox accesses Protected Mode RAM.

  150.   Setting colors has a new menu which makes customizing the Paradox
  151.   screens a simpler process.

  153.   6-Some Other Changes To Paradox are:

  155.   Import/Export - Now able to Import/Export Quattro Pro Files

  157.   Menus - Paradox now uses "incremental menus". If any menu has
  158.   more than one choice with the same starting letter, typing the
  159.   second, third and successive letters of the choice you want will
  160.   select the item with the minimum number of keystrokes.  The
  161.   visible list of choices will be limited on-screen as the letters
  162.   are entered.

  164.   As usual, earlier versions are upwardly compatible.  Table
  165.   objects (data, valchecks, image seatings, etc.) produced in 3.0
  166.   or earlier versions will work in Paradox 3.5 (It is recommended
  167.   that you use {Modify} {Restructure} <F10> {Do-it!} without making
  168.   changes to your tables once in Paradox 3.5).

  170.   Microsoft (tm) Windows - Paradox will also run within Enhanced
  171.   mode Windows 3, but only in Real mode.  It can use Expanded Ram
  172.   under Windows control as Paradox is XMS compatible.  The PIF and
  173.   GRP files are provided for using Paradox under Windows 3.0.  See
  174.   the Paradox README.

  176.   7-PAL has been updated in this new release in a number of ways:

  178.   Some new PAL commands include:

  180.   -CalcDebug which Allows a calculated field to display a blank
  181.   (with OFF option) or display ERROR (with CalcDebug set to ON).
  182.   -SaveTables - Forces table changes out to the disk without
  183.   clearing the workspace, locks and main mode activities.
  184.   -ShowArray, ShowFiles, ShowMenu, ShowTables - The Until and Keyto
  185.   options have been added to the commands above. The Until option
  186.   allows a programmer to set exit keys in a manner similar to the
  187.   WAIT TABLE command.  The Keyto option will store the key pressed
  188.   to select from the menu to a variable.

  216.   -CopyToArray has been changed to allow insertion of new records
  217.   into detail table.
  218.   -Run NoShell - New option for RUN that will not automatically
  219.   load command.com. This saves memory, and allows DOS error values
  220.   to be passed to Retval when Paradox is entered again.
  221.   -SETSWAP has changed to fit into the totally new memory
  222.   management system.

  224.   Some of the new functions are:

  226.   -Rmemleft() - This function returns a value representing the
  227.   amount of RAM available in the Code Pool portion of available
  228.   RAM.
  229.   -FormType() - This is a Boolean function that requires a text
  230.   string of a form type (MultiRecord, linked, etc.).  The function
  231.   will then return its value based on the type of form currently
  232.   displayed.
  233.   -RecordStatus() - This is a Boolean function that is passed a
  234.   string of a status (new, locked, modified, etc.) It will then
  235.   return true or false based on the status of the current image
  236.   record.
  237.   <Alt-F10> {MiniScript} and {Value} - When using MiniScript or
  238.   Value, the <CTRL-E> key stroke will bring up the last line typed
  239.   in, allowing you to edit the previous line.  <CTRL-E> key stroke
  240.   will bring up the last line typed in, allowing you to edit the
  241.   previous line.
